If you only have a couple of hours, you will spend most of it sitting in traffic and looking for a parking spot. Park further out of town and use the public transport.
Reply:It may be difficult, but not totally impossible to find parking. I have never done it on a Friday night. If you are lucky, one or two of the theatres may have finished shows and people driving away and leaving spaces. There is some on-street parking around Charing Cross Police Station (Near Covent Garden) - Chandos Place, William IV Street area (Near Star on Map). But do check the signs as some areas are for residents only.
Reply:I think you'll be struggling to find any on-street parking at all at that time - that area's fully awake and happening! The best you can hope for is a meter space somewhere like Soho Square or on-street North of Oxford Street, but parking spaces are like rocking horse droppings and free of charge ones even more so.

Either grit teeth, cough up ££££ for an NCP and look cheerful, go in by bike, bus or train or be prepared for a *lot* of driving around playing hunt-the-space!
Reply:The words London and Free don't go togehther, remember its the Congestion Charge zone your talking about. If there was one free space in 5 miles at midnight I would have taken it, or one of the many other million people who live there. You will have to rely on NCP car parks, meters or public transport. Unfortunately some people pay up to £5 per hour in the evening too. I live in London and would not use the car in the evening, its a total rip-off!
