Any suggestions for casual central London pub open late on a Friday?

Going out tonight and want to go to a non-smart, fairly laid-back pub or bar in central London, pref around the Covent garden / Leicester square / Soho / Piccadilly Circus kind of areas.

Suggestions much appreciated!

What can you do in London when you only have two days to visit?

First visit and only 2 days to see the sights. Suggestions are: London Eye, Covent Garden and British Museum. Agree??

What's a must see in West End?

Suggestions for Pubs??

What can you do in London when you only have two days to visit?
Westminster Abbey, Tower of London, Boat ride down the Thames (from the former to the latter). If you have time, the London Museum and Tate Gallery are must-sees, too. Pubs along the water in Hammersmith are fun, but Covent Garden ones are always hopping,too. Enjoy!
Reply:I just got back from whirlwind trip- I went on a Contiki...it is a student vacation company, and like you we only had 2 days in London...I would highly recommend taking a double decker bus tour-that is what I did, and I got to see almost everything I wanted to see in one day. I would also suggest going to Piccadilly Circus at night- there are tons of bars there. Hope this helps. You can check out my blog if you want, I have London covered and you might pick up some tips there as well.

Reply:I SE THAT YOU'RE GOING TO THE PUBS IFYOU DO JUST PLAN ON GETTING LAID AND THAT WEILL FILL UP THE TWO DAYS
Reply:the three you mentioned are very cool, I would add as my favorite St Paul's Cathedral, apart from being a stunning building you can walk up to the dome of the cathedral and they have a massive balcony which has spectacular views of London and if you are feeling a bit braver there are stairs inside the dome that take you to the top of the dome where there is a tiny balcony fits about 6 people.

www.beerintheevening.com is a great site with reviews for pubs, just stay out of leicester square area for pubs as they are all cr+p. Angel has some nice pubs or you can shoot down to clapham common area for some cool pubs.

There are so many, one of my favorite places is just behind Waterloo/ Southark station there is a cool restaurant called TAS and a bar called Jacks bar next to it se1 8da ( isabella street) is the adress if you put it into streetmap.co.uk it is under the railway arches.

cool have fun i am sure you will

Does anyone have a recipe for spinach and chick pea soup?

Many years ago the Covent Garden Soup company used to sell a 'morocan chick pea and spinach' soup. Have been waiting for them to do it again but no joy yet. Does anyone know how to make it?

Does anyone have a recipe for spinach and chick pea soup?
Moroccan Spiced Chickpea Soup

Chickpeas seem to call out for Moroccan spices, so that's what they get here. I make this soup really chunky and hearty.

1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for garnish

1 large onion, medium diced

6 to 8 cloves garlic, pressed

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1 teaspoon ground cumin

1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper

1 heaping teaspoon sweet paprika

1 (14.5-ounce) can chopped tomatoes

3 (15-ounce) cans chickpeas, drained and rinsed well

1 quart vegetable broth or reduced-sodium chicken broth

1 teaspoon sugar

Kosher salt

Freshly ground black pepper

1 (5-ounce) package pre-washed baby spinach

Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium-high heat. Add onion and garlic and saute until the onions begin to turn translucent; lower heat if browning starts to occur. Add spices and saute a minute or so. Add tomatoes, chickpeas, broth, and sugar. Season with a couple pinches of salt and 10 grinds fresh pepper. Stir well. Chickpeas should be just covered with liquid. If level is shy, add some water so the chickpeas are just covered.

Bring to a simmer, then lower heat to low and gently simmer for 45 minutes.

Remove soup from heat. Use a potato masher to mash up some of the chickpeas right in the pot. Stir in the spinach and let heat through until wilted, just a couple minutes.

Season again, to taste, with salt and pepper.

Serve soup, drizzled lightly with extra-virgin olive oil, if desired.
Reply:moroccan chick pea and spinach soup

2 tsp. olive oil

1 medium onion, chopped (about 1 cup)

1 clove garlic, minced (about 1 tsp.)

1/4 cup smooth natural peanut butter

2 cups low-sodium vegetable broth, divided

1 tsp. paprika

1 tsp. ground coriander

1/4 tsp. cayenne pepper

1 15-oz. can chickpeas, rinsed and drained

1 14-oz. can diced tomatoes

2 oz. spinach, chopped (about 2 cups)

Heat oil in large pot over medium heat. Add onion, and sauté 5 minutes, or until soft and golden. Add garlic, and cook 2 to 3 minutes more, or until garlic is lightly browned.

Blend peanut butter and 1/2 cup broth in food processor to make smooth paste. Blend remaining broth into mixture.

Add paprika, coriander and cayenne to onion mixture, and sauté 1 minute, or until fragrant. Stir in peanut butter mixture, chickpeas and tomatoes. Simmer 5 minutes. Season with salt and pepper, and stir in spinach just before serving.

Q2. Where can I buy your products?

You'll find our fresh soups and sauces in the chiller cabinets of most major supermarkets, Sainsburys, Tesco, Morrisons, Somerfield, Asda, Budgens, Co-op, Safeway, Waitrose etc.

Ranges are:

* Asparagus

This is where luxury and simplicity come together - in the seductive aroma and creamy green of pureed asparagus and in the easy finish of onion and potato.

* Beef %26amp; Vegetable

Big, beefy and aromatic - this glossy herb-scented soup is packed with tender beef, onions, potatoes, celery and leeks, and stuffed with the delicate flavour of thyme.

* Broccoli %26amp; Stilton

Pale, creamy and endlessly comforting - here's the tasty green of softened broccoli florets, the lively tang of mature stilton and lingering warmth of black pepper.

* Carrot %26amp; Coriander

Our original and most popular fresh soup. We were the first to spice the sweetness of carrot with nutmeg and the peppery zing of coriander leaves. Where we lead, others follow...

* Cauliflower %26amp; Mature Cheddar

Cauliflower has apparently become so unfashionable, there's a risk of it disappearing from our grocery shelves. Here's a tribute to a classic recipe. Forget your school dinner memories - this is what cauliflower cheese should taste like.

* Chicken Mulligatawny

The classic soup of Anglo-Indian cookery is as vibrant as ever - chicken, coconut, rice and lentils in a mildly spiced base of ginger, coriander, cumin and cayenne pepper.

* Chicken Soup

Rich, velvety and inviting - our full flavoured chicken soup comes with the sparkle of white wine and the satisfaction of double cream, pureed garlic and soft onion.

* Chilli Bean

A veritable bean feast! Aromatic, earthy and packed with wholesome goodies. A subtle warmth develops to excite your taste-buds, as we say in our kitchen 'Eat fresh soup, for goodness sake'!

* Creamy Parsnip

In honour of this often forgotten veggie hero, we've kept our recipe simple. Fragrant, slightly sweet parsnips married with warming roasted garlic and cream. Delightful.

* Leek %26amp; Potato

Soup that's as heart-warming as we can make it - generous slivers of leek softened in a melt-in-the-mouth blend of potatoes, onions, milk and cream.

* Lentil %26amp; Smoked Bacon

Thick, generous and reviving - we've packed this smokey, aromatic soup with lentils, bacon and oak-smoked garlic, then finished with a swirl of English mustard.

* Moroccan Chickpea

Heating up this soup will fill your kitchen with the pungent aromas of exotic spices, native to the souks (open air markets) of Morocco. We've combined authentic warm and earthy flavours with the subtle sweetness of apricots.

* Minestrone

An exuberant mix of colours, flavours and textures - chunks of garlic and a scattering of fragrant Mediterranean herbs.

* Pea %26amp; Ham

Thick, smokey and reviving, this is the soup for dull days - with whole peas and small chunks of prime-cut ham, it's a generous bowlful of pea-green cheer.

* Plum Tomato %26amp; Basil

Light, fragrant and easy - this refreshing swirl of chopped tomato and herbs packs all the flavour of juicy ripe tomatoes with an aromatic handful of basil, oregano and rosemary.

* Plum Tomato %26amp; Mascarpone

There's a real flavour intensity to our delicious plum tomatoes. To balance their sweetness, we've stirred in a dollop of silky mascarpone cheese for a smooth Italian style treat.

* Smoked Haddock Chowder

Warming and substantial - we packed this big-hearted chowder with flaked smoked haddock, chunks of potato and carrot, and a lively finish of cayenne pepper.

* Soup of the Month (NEW!)

* Salmon %26amp; Watercress

We're proud of this flavourful bowl of luxury. Meaty flakes of salmon and bulging handfuls of vivid, dark green watercress stirred into rich creamy potato. A real treat to be had.

* Spicy Butternut Squash %26amp; Sweet Potato

Our smooth blend of squash, sweet potato and mascarpone cheese, with flecks of red chilli. The warmth from garam masala and cumin lend their Indian influences to this warming soup.

* Spinach %26amp; Nutmeg

To bring out the smooth and velvety green luxury of spinach leaves and softened onions, we added single cream, zesty lemon juice and a generous pinch of nutmeg.

* Sweet Potato %26amp; Corn Chowder

This hearty chowder combines the vibrant, cheeful colours of orangy sweet potato, golden sweetcorn and ruby red peppers. Swirled into creamy potato, it's a robust bowl of nourishment.

* Thai Chicken

Hot, Asian and inescapably moreish - this blend of creamy coconut, zesty lime and chunky chicken pieces comes with a rush of jalapeno peppers and pureed ginger.

* Three Bean %26amp; Red Lenti

Thick, smoky and satisfying - a glorious feast of cannellini beans, red kidney beans and black-eyed beans with red split lentils, oak-smoked garlic and sun-dried tomatoes.

* Tomato %26amp; Chunky Veg

A hearty soup if ever we've made one. Crammed full of sweet juicy tomatoes, and bulging with an endless list of vegetables - 8 of them... go on count them.

* Toulouse Sausage %26amp; Puy Lentil

A thick, cheerful and chunky Gallic soup of herb, garlic and spice-filled Toulouse pork sausages with delicate Puy lentils, juicy tomatoes and flageolet beans.

* Wild Mushroom

The heady aroma of wild mushrooms and crisp white wine draws you into this creamy soup suffused with the warmth of garlic, parsley and black pepper.

How far does it take to get to St George Drive from Oxford Street by bus?

We will be visiting London during May29 - June 7. In our last trip our hitel was in Tottenham Court Road and the location was very convenient with good access to Oxford Street, Covent Garden, Picaddily Circus,... In this trip we have found a hotel in St George Drive . They say the nearest tube stations are Pimlico and Victoria.

I thought the place is a little bit remote? Am I mistaken?

How far does it take to get to St George Drive from Oxford Street by bus?
57 minutes with bus 24 then bus 73 (changing at Goodge Street).

32 minutes if you use the tube as well..

What are the best areas to live in Central London on a max900pw budget?

I'll be moving to London and wondering what are the best areas to look for a flat (or house).

Would like to be at reasonable distance from Hide Park / Belgravia (work), should be a lively area with plenty of restaurants, cafes, bars, etc, yet not completely run over by tourists (a quiet side street from main tourist areas is OK).

Some friends recommended me areas such as South Kensington, Picadilly, Covent Garden, Soho. Areas like Islington, Camden and Notting Hill seem cool but a bit out of the way (hate commuting), while Mayfair I've been told is too posh and 'boring' (true? don't want posh and boring). And what about Chelsea?

No need to tell me that all these areas are expensive and way over priced, I know. My budget is up to 900pound a week (unfurnished).

I guess I am asking for too much, but all suggestions are welcome. Thanks.

What are the best areas to live in Central London on a max900pw budget?
Hiya,

Yeah agree with Chelsea - but also consider the areas directly surrounding Regents Park. I live in St Johns wood and I believe its got everything you're looking for. NW8 is an upmarket area of London just enough out of the way not to be inhabited with tourists. - anywhere near the park is good so Park Road - Prince Albert Rd - even Primrose Hill (where many celebs like to move to. The housing is great - many spacious Georgian houses with high ceilings.

Its pretty cool up here - I will never leave anyway - my brother lives in Kensington and it has its plus points but i wouldnt swap for the world. Anyway - just thought i;d give you another option - as if its not confusing enough already! I ended up here by accident I was originally looking in Maida Vale - very happy too... seriously, consider it.
Reply:Hi

Chelsea is a good place to live, convenients, safe, lots of pubs/bars/cafes %26amp; restaurants, shops. You can get a bus from chelsea to hyde park corner in 15 minutes. The bus routes are 24 hour as well. A few draw backs are theres a lack of a 'community' feel, lots of foreigners, its very noisy as well as its a lively area with lots of police siren's going all the time, plus its really busy on a match day
Reply:St. John's Wood is a very nice area with restaurants and bars, and only about 15 minutes on the tube (Jubilee Line) from the centre of town. Yes London is expensive but 900PW is a large budget and you'll have no trouble finding somewhere for that amount.

What is the easiest and least expensive way to get internet connectivity in my flat?

I live in Covent Garden, London. Unfortunately (and suprisingly) I can not "borrow" anyone's wireless connection.

What is the easiest and least expensive way to get internet connectivity in my flat?
dial-up or broadband

What are the best parts of London to live for young families?

I am close to relocating my family to london. I have a 5 yr old boy and 2yr old girl. My work is in Covent Garden area. What are the best places to live for a few years in 3 bedroom flat? I've heard Notting Hill and Kensington. Is that right?

What are the best parts of London to live for young families?
Well yes, if you can afford to live in Kensington then it would be great but very very expensive. You'll need at least a million for a semi-decent home there. You don't want a flat with a 2 year old as they will still be in a pushchair won't they? You don't want your poor wife dragging a pushchair down 3 flights of stairs every day! Notting Hill is also very affluent. What you want is good schools, walking distance to commons and parks, good public transport links and a friendly area. I live in West Norwood in South East London and it's mainly families here. My street is old victorian houses (still expensive for a 5 bed around £400,000), but you're near Streatham Common and local shops and great school. You need to do your research. Try www.upmystreet.com to get an idea of the schools in the areas you're looking in and www.findaproperty.com to check out prices in those areas. You need to time your commute to Covent Garden once you've chosen your area. Try an area with good rail links rather than on the tube as it is more likely to be child friendly the further outside of London that you get. Bromley is beautiful and has so much for kids there. The trains are great from South London and go very regularly into London Bridge and Victoria. From Victoria you could then just get the Circle / District line round to Embankment which is a few minutes walk to Covent Garden.
Reply:Try Finchley. It has a large choice of parks and is close to Hampstead Heath, good shops, schools and libraries and plenty of interesting family activities within easy reach, including a threatre with children's productions and workshops. It is on the Northern Line and is cheaper than some of the areas you have been looking at. It is also outside the London Congestion zone. http://www.tfl.gov.uk/roadusers/congesti...
Reply:Well, they are central and VERY expensive... but a nice area is Maida Wale or St Johns Wood. It is still easy to get to your work, but its a bit more family orientated.
Reply:anywhere outside london I'd advise!!!
Reply:Windsor its not in london bit 15 minites away its a very nice town

There is a lawyer called Andrew Norris. However, the real one does not practice in Betterton Street.

If you got an email from someone claiming to be him then it is a scam. Others have posted the same question here. Delete it and move on.

Does anyone know why Rolando Villazon and Bryn Terfel have pulled out of operas at Covent Garden this season?
Go to this link.
Reply:Rolando Villazon has withdrawn from the rest of 2007 performances, not citing reasons that are told. Terfel, I do not know about, but it doesn't just affect Covent Garden; the entire world of opera suffers.
Reply:Rolando Villazón

'For the rest of the 2007 season Mr Villazón has cancelled all his performances, including his debut recital at the Carnegie Hall and Roméo et Juliette at the Metropolitan Opera, due to health problems'

Bryn Terfel

'Singer Bryn Terfel has pulled out of a Royal Opera House production of The Ring Cycle due to family difficulties.'
Reply:Villazon i don't know about but Bryn Terfel has had some family difficulties,his young child hasn't been very well and Bryn wants to take time out for his nearest and dearest.

He has been overworked and needs a break,Bryn loves singing and wants to perform all he can but events have conspired against him.His own manager has gently chided him for saying yes a bit too much !.

He's a legend in my book,i love him and i hope all is well soon.
Reply:These questions are discussed in depth at Opera-L@Listserv.CUNY.EDU -- lots of theories but few facts.
Reply:Bryn Terfel had family issues - his daughter I think - which meant he hadn't prepared for the role properly. Not sure about Villazon.
Reply:I think because they just aren't GOOD enough!!! or just because they quit the job......
Reply:Maybe due to the tragic death of Luciano Pavorotti, he may have been due to appear there and as a mark of respect they decided to pull out.

Reply:Well, it depends what you mean by cheap. Reasonable budget hotels are mainly around Sussex Gardens, Paddington. It's a tube journey to Covent Garden, unforntunately. Try the Cardiff Hotel, Norfolk Square, off London St, Paddington. 0207-723-3513. You can usually haggle to £45 on a single room and it's friendly. Or try the hotels in Cartwright Gardens, Bloomsbury, which may be a bit nearer.

Anyones knows a guitar shop close from covent garden ?
From Covent Garden station, head up Long Acre towards Leicester Sq. Then, on Charing Cross Road, turn right up to Tottenham Ct Rd Station. On Charing Cross, on the right hand side and turnings off, there are many guitar and music shops.
Reply:The Place to go is Denmark Street, you could spend a whole afternoon wandering up and down there,

Rare %26amp; Vintage Guitars is like a museum for Amps and Guitars.

Worthy of special mention is Andys, its been there forever, and I'm pretty sure any guitarist of note in the past couple of decades has used it at onetime or another.

The London Resonator Centre is there, Hanks, Rokas, MusicRoom, Rose-Morris.

This isnt just a list I have pulled off of the net, I can speak from personal experiance, having worked in the area, and wasted many a lunchtime as a teenager there.

I'm 44 now, and still make it a port of call when I am in London.

When you go, expect to be blown away, the Staff are friendly, and know what they are talking about, and I mean in ALL the shops. As other posts have said, Charing cross road has many great shops too, But for me its Denmark Street, aka TIn Pan Alley!

Good place to eat that is not too expensive but not cheep in covent garden London??

Take a walk down Neal street to Belgo Central and have a nice Belgium meal with a great Belgium Beer. It used to be if you sat in the restaurant side you got a free shot of schnaps, but im not sure if they still do that. They also used to do great deals on 'beat the clock' If you eat at 5.30pm you would pay £5.30 for your meal.

New covent garden market?

To pitch a stall

1200 sq meter = 30k a year

600 sq meter = 15k a year

Is that aceptable???

New covent garden market?
Yes it is if you can make a profit on the goods you sell. If you do not, it does not matter how cheap (or expensive)the rent is. It is up to you to decide if what you have for sale can be priced competitively enough to sell the number of items required to give you a reasonable profit.

Anyone know a good restaurant in Covent Garden, my budget is 25 per head per person.?
fire and stone make amazing food. you can get drinks, and three courses there for 25 per person or less even. and the food is nice and the place is lovely.
Reply:Covent Garden is a dead zone as far as good restaurants go - it is set up very much for tourists. In fact in the Good Food Guide there is just one restaurant listed in Covent Garden, Rules. This is quite a quaint place (the oldest restaurant in London, specialising in game) but a meal with modest wine would be £50 a head or so. At this budget level I suggest that you take a short walk to Chinatown, where value can be had. I would suggest Fung Shing and Mr Kong as the best Chinatown places. Mr Kong is the cheaper of the two, and if you order jasmine tea instead of wine then you would definitely be able to have a good meal for £25 a head.

If you insist on Cvent Garden then Wagamama would be your best bet. It is pretty basic but decent, serving noodles. This would also fit in your price range.

Reply:If you want a nice restaurant, I'd go to Suzie Wong on Old Compton Street (W1D 4TL). It's great for groups as the food is Thai tapas-style so great for sharing. Owned by the chef, Ken Hom, he decor is very plush and they have some atmospheric seating for groups in booths with comfy cushions. Their website is below...
Reply:I have just gone into the website and it sounds very good to me, around 27 per head, But for the extra £11 the Ritz are doing special for £38 per head and its a memory if you have never been there. But the website sounds pretty good. Make your own choice. Browns has a load of stars so must be good. Enjoy

Im going on daytrip to covent garden&London eye. Whos been and what are both like?

London Eye's a bit expensive for a 30min (if you're lucky) flight but if the weather's good the views are good.

The Garden is very touristy but worth a visit, once.

Keep tight hold of your purse!
Reply:If you are hungry when you get to Covent Garden, it's well worth checking out Cafe Pacifico on Langley Street (just along from the tube station) - the best mexican food in London, bar none!!
Reply:oh my god i am so jealous of you!! i lived in london for 5 months and visited covent garden many times! it's classy, and has a lot of cute shops. but if you are not planning on dropping some big bucks there...it's not worth the trip! (btw, take the elevator off the tube...you will be sorry if you think you can make the stairs!!...fools!)

someone said camden market is a lot more wild....but i wouldn't even compare the two. if you are looking to visit covent garden specifically then you probably are not the type of person who would want to go to camden market with your wallet duct taped to your stomatch for safety and try out bongs, peirce your nipples, and buy a dildo!! some fun "sight seeing", but a little too crazy for me!

also, the london eye is phenomenal (again $$$ - but what isn't in london)...but you have to make sure you get to do it on a clear day, otherwise it's not worth the trip. i went on a partially cloudy day and i was not impressed, but had some friends rave about it!!

enjoy....i am so jealous!
Reply:As far as expensive, Covent Garden is no more expensive than any other place in London. There are wonderful little shops, and more well-known stores in the area. It is great for people-watching, as well as relaxing while enjoying the street performers. I always make it a point to go to Covent Garden every time I go to London. Also, it is true: the best time to go on the London Eye is in clear weather. But, since you are pre-booked, hope for the best! Take a camera!
Reply:london eye is overpriced and over rated and convent garden is very pretty well worth a browse
Reply:I didn't find Covent Garden particularly interesting. Camden market is MUCH bigger and wilder. Best at weekends.

The London Eye is worth going on. On a sunny clear day you will see more of course. I wouldn't buy one of the photo's they offer you - not worth it.

If you're young and full of energy you could do 6 places in one hectic day. there are plenty of places to go without spending £ on entrance fees. Trafalgar square, Buckingham palace, Tower Bridge, National Gallery, Tate Modern (the best bits cost £) Millenium Bridge, St Paul's Cathedral, Oxford Street, Bond St area.

Good places for lunch in Covent Garden, Soho area?
Hi, I work in the Westend and there a loads of places to have lunch but lots of thee are over priced tourist traps....

Great little pizza restaurant opposite the "White Bear" along Charing Cross Road, just by Zoo bar. They serve a great pizza and from 12pm until 5pm they offer any pizza on the menu with a glass of wine or soft drink for £4.95, it's real bargain. My colleagues and I go there all the time.

Also, just round the corner is the Westend Kitchen, they offer a 3 course meal for about £4! Things like Cottage Pie and Apple Crumble, real comfort food.

You will find lots "All you can Buffets" mostly Chinese and again great value. Try Mr Woos, good food and just £4.95 - As much as your belly can take!

I think a lot of pubs are over priced, they offer Fish %26amp; Chips from £6.95 but I'm sure if it's any good.

Enjoy!

Hi...I'm tkaing my family to London soon but the hotel I'm staying in (Travelodge) doesn't have a left luggae facility so I need somewhere near where I can leave case before we can check in on the first day. Is there anywhere nearby....perhaps the nearest mainline rail station?

Thanks

Left luggage desk/lockers near to Covent garden (London)?
All mainline rail stations have left luggage facilities. If costs about £5.50 per item for 24 hours.

Nearest station to Covent Garden is Charing Cross.

Anyone eaten at The Hospital, Covent Garden? Any good?

My mate's just become a Member and is trying to get loads of us down there.

Anyone eaten at The Hospital, Covent Garden? Any good?
I've been there twice - it's changed hands though. Used to be run by the people that set up a restaurant called Thyme in Clapham. Their original restaurant was fantastic, but when they went to the hospital they massively increased the prices and tried to go too fancy.

The last time I went it was fine - prices had come down a bit, but the food was a bit less out of the ordinary - e.g pretty typical modern british. The decor is great though and they've got very good big round tables for about 8-10 people.

On balance I'd say it's a good, but not outstanding place

How far is covent garden from london zoo??

About 15-20 minutes by Tube. As pointed out by the next post it's about 3 miles, however it takes about 1.5 hours to walk that far on city streets not 45 minutes. I would still take the Tube, it's cheap, fast and you want to save the shoe leather for when you get there.

How far is covent garden from london zoo??
Its just under three miles - probably about 40-45 minutes walk. Plan your walking route at http://www.walkit.com/ or public transport at http://www.tfl.gov.uk

Why is covent garden so famous?

"Covent Garden, London is famous for its shops, street performers, bars, restaurants, theatres and the Royal Opera House. Covent Garden is an Italian-style piazza packed with restaurants, bars and fashionable boutiques. Surrounded by Theatreland, in the heart of London's West End, the area is recognised as the capital's premier entertainment and leisure destination."

http://www.coventgardenlife.com/info/cov...

http://www.coventgarden.uk.com/history.h...

There used to be the famous fruit and vegetable market there until it moved to Vauxhall in 1973. Inigo Jones designed it, and there had been brothels and theatres there for a long time (see history link above).

Not far is Trafalgar Square, St Martin-in-the-Fields and the National Gallery, and the Coliseum for the English National Opera.

Aside from camden town, portabello market, covent garden and hammersmith, what are other markets can i go.?

am new in London, i want to shop, but have limited budget. i want to go to markets with the cheapest prices, or, products are on sale.

Aside from camden town, portabello market, covent garden and hammersmith, what are other markets can i go.?
Avoid Covent Garden. Its no longer a real market and is mainly the run of the mill high street shops with thousands of tourists!

There are normally some good local markets for food. Depending where you live you may want to dig out some farmers markets as well. Borough Market (Sat AM, London Bridge station) is the most famous for food but is VERY busy and is aimed at those with a bit of spare cash! Worth a visit for the sheer pleasure alone but be warned, it can be expensive if you start tasting things! ("ooh yeah, that's nice, one of them please"..)

Spitalfields Market (Sun, Liverpool Street stn) is another famous and massive market. Recently regenerated it has lost its quirky edge to some extent but is a fantastic market to go to. Eclectic mix of food, clothes, bric-a-brac, furniture and retro goods. Also located in a great area so you can pop over to Brick Lane which has some good stores in the Old Truman Brewery and has a Sunday market.

Very nearby is Petticoat Lane market, which has sprawled away from Petticoat Lane itself and has become a bit tatty. It now has a good mix of standard market stalls selling everything from clothes, bags, tools, CDs etc. Worth looking at to pick up some cheap bargains or just for real cheap junk! Also Sunday.

Columbia Road market is fantastic! Its a plant and flower market on a long narrow road and it is absolutely heaving! Follow the signposts from Liverpool Street or grab a short bus ride. Excellent place to sort out your garden!

For a whole list of food markets check out the London Farmers Market website:

http://www.lfm.org.uk/

Be warned, Peckham Farmers Market is not worth a special visit!

A good way to find a real local market near to you is to visit the local councils website. All street traders are licensed by the borough council so you can find out what markets are on, when, and how many pitches they have. (Also how many are free gives you an indication of the quality!)

In Wandsworth we have Battersea High Street market which is really just half a dozen stalls but is very busy with the local stocking up on cheap fruit and veg and other bits and bobs.

For a more hi-brow trip, head to Clapham Junction and walk to Northcote Road. Not only is the market along there pretty good (bread, olives, fruit, plants, etc) but the shops along Northcote Road are mainly small independent traders and it has a great reputation in the area.

http://www.wandsworth.gov.uk/Home/Commun...

Be warned it is also known as Nappy Valley for its location in the valley between Clapham and Wandsworth commons and its affluent pram pushing 30 somethings!

For a real flavoursome local market in north London, head to Walthamstow on a Saturday. The main pedestrianised street there had a great range last time i went and it is 'real' market traders and is definitely not aimed at the rich buggy types!

Moving slightly in there is Dalston market, which is actually know as something else but I can't remember the name. Head to Dalston Kingsland station and follow your nose. Ethnic market with lots of halal, Caribbean, and African food and stalls. Don't expect anything posh around there as its not the wealthiest part of town!

Transport for London used to do a great leaflet with all the markets on and how to get there. Worth picking up if they still do it.

Other than that I would say, just head out and explore!

Good luck and have fun!
Reply:It depends what you want to buy.

Petticoat Lane has a good selection as does Spitalfieds.

Borough Market is good for food.

Although if you're on a tight budget Supermarkets can sometimes be cheaper for food and Primark for clothes!

Can you recommend a hotel near Covent Gardens, particularly near the Opera House?

Seriously, I have to put up some business associates, and I'd like something cheap, yet inexpensive.

And I will need 4-5 rooms, for about 3-4 days.

Can you recommend a hotel near Covent Gardens, particularly near the Opera House?
Your best bet is the Strand Palace Hotel. 3 minutes walk to Covent Garden. It's a 3 star but absolutely massive so you'll usually always get a room there. It's got a 24 hour lobby, coke machines in the hall, lifts, a couple of bars and a restaurant. www.tripadvisor.com for more info. Try booking via www.laterooms.com for a discount or direct at www.strandpalacehotel.co.uk

Does anyone go to Gymbox in Covent Garden - any good?

I haven't been there as I'm already very fit! But a friend of mine said it was more like a nightclub than a fitness club.

There are boxing rings, Boxing for women, Gladiator Games, African Dance. I think there's also a new stretching game involving a giant Twister mat!

Non-member fee is around £8 per class. So it's worth a try!

I want to know if there is a place where you can find those statue street performers in berlin.

Berlin. Is there an area similar to the Ramblas in Barcelona or Covent Garden in London where street performer
You can see them in areas such as next to the Gedechnis Kirche (on KuDamm) - there is a famous guy overthere (personally I think that something is a bit off with him), Hackescher Markt, or sometimes in the vacinity of the Brandenburger Tor.

Right now (and every year in August) Berlin's celebrated the "Gauklerfest", a street-performers/clowns festival.
