It is very, very disheartening to see the passing of both the Theatre Museum, Covent Garden and the Redgrave Theatre in (I think) Leatherhead.
In the 25 years that I`ve lived in this country I have witnessed the savage capitalization of its resources including, sadly, the arts. And it is with greatest and most profound sadness that I witness the termination of both the Theatre Museum, Covent Garden as well as the Sir Michael Redgrave Theate.
The Theatre Museum was, I believe, free or else there was a nominal charge.
Saddest of all this termination is indicative of a trend; and a trend derived I might add but not particularise from foreign interests. The V%26amp;A, for instance, of which the Theatre Museum is a part, has set levels of membership and only the gold members (who pay about £250 pa) get to go to the noshes and posh parties. Previously anyone who was a member got to participate in the fun stuff.
There are two ways of looking at things: with blinkers and without.
The Capitalization of Britain?
Sadder still is the Lowry Theatre in Salford that was built in a regeneration area with public money, which tries it's damndest to exclude local youth whilst lavishing freebies on the luvvies.
The blinkers are firmly on in Salford. Same day, different track....
Reply:If you want it....you pay for it. simple as that
Reply:Don't worry, we'll be economically bankrupt within a generation. Hold Tight.
Reply:And the question is what?
Reply:The problem with "art" in this country is that it's losing it's popularity through being utter tripe. Someone leaves a bed unmade, or pile sup rubbish, or flicks a light on and off and then claims it to be art and "representational".
Frankly the tosh people turn out these days is it any wonder people no longer give a damn about it? A messy collection of wire hangers bent into a shape that doesn't look like anything does NOT represent the shattered and sharded mind of the creator, it represents someone's dumb enough to hand this muppet a grant while he sits out back of TopShop banging all the discarded hangers together.
If you want something to save art in Britain, try reintroducing art to Britain first, cos there sure as hell ain't nothing to write home about here!
Reply:I agree, the elites are being even greedier than normal.
With the death of any form of social political system to counter the ravening trough feeders there will inevitably be an increase in the things you describe and much worse NHS etc etc etc.
It is a sad fact that the blinker trade has never had it so good....
