Does anyone know why Rolando Villazon and Bryn Terfel have pulled out of operas at Covent Garden this season?
Can't find any news anywhere - thanks!
Does anyone know why Rolando Villazon and Bryn Terfel have pulled out of operas at Covent Garden this season?
Go to this link.
Reply:Rolando Villazon has withdrawn from the rest of 2007 performances, not citing reasons that are told. Terfel, I do not know about, but it doesn't just affect Covent Garden; the entire world of opera suffers.
Reply:Rolando Villazón
'For the rest of the 2007 season Mr Villazón has cancelled all his performances, including his debut recital at the Carnegie Hall and Roméo et Juliette at the Metropolitan Opera, due to health problems'
Bryn Terfel
'Singer Bryn Terfel has pulled out of a Royal Opera House production of The Ring Cycle due to family difficulties.'
Reply:Villazon i don't know about but Bryn Terfel has had some family difficulties, his young child hasn't been very well and Bryn wants to take time out for his nearest and dearest.
He has been overworked and needs a break,Bryn loves singing and wants to perform all he can but events have conspired against him.His own manager has gently chided him for saying yes a bit too much !.
He's a legend in my book,i love him and i hope all is well soon.
Reply:These questions are discussed in depth at Opera-L@Listserv.CUNY.EDU -- lots of theories but few facts.
Reply:Bryn Terfel had family issues - his daughter I think - which meant he hadn't prepared for the role properly. Not sure about Villazon.
Reply:I think because they just aren't GOOD enough!!! or just because they quit the job......
Reply:Maybe due to the tragic death of Luciano Pavorotti, he may have been due to appear there and as a mark of respect they decided to pull out.
Reply:Usually, because they couldn't clinch a contract.

Best places in central London, Soho/Covent Garden etc, where I can get free wifi access AND great coffee!?
WIFI Access for free? No chance, or you have to "snoff" around for local unsecured W-Lan networks, but that's illegal (have had one accidently near soho square, in the Charity coffee house, that is on Dean Street)

Reply:Well, it depends what you mean by cheap. Reasonable budget hotels are mainly around Sussex Gardens, Paddington. It's a tube journey to Covent Garden, unforntunately. Try the Cardiff Hotel, Norfolk Square, off London St, Paddington. 0207-723-3513. You can usually haggle to £45 on a single room and it's friendly. Or try the hotels in Cartwright Gardens, Bloomsbury, which may be a bit nearer.
